After this recent post highlighting why Whistler wedding video is so important, I received a number of inquires from soon-to-be-married couples asking for introductions to the best-of Whistler wedding filmers. Somebody always on my list of people to reccomend for Whistler wedding video is Aussie-born wedding film maker, Mel Fry of Whistler Wedding Films. Mel is very talented at what she does, is super fun to work with, and has an infectious smile and joy about her sure to translate into your wedding film.
I recently had the chance to catch up with Mel and ask her some questions about life in Whistler, Whistler Wedding Films, and what makes Whistler weddings so special. But before you get to the interview below, watch her 2016 Showreel and get a feel for her work.
Mel, you’re an Aussie (and we love ya for it) and you’re making Whistler home. What brought you to Whistler and what’s keeping you here?
My husband and I both love skiing and we would often go on ski trips in Australia and NZ, with the dream of a ski trip in Canada one day. When we got married it was an easy decision to have a winter honeymoon in Whistler. We fell in love with this beautiful town, the mountains, skiing, people and outdoor culture and we haven’t looked back.
What makes a Whistler wedding special and unique? Or, why should couple’s consider gettin’ hitched in Whistler?
Whistler is such a beautiful and unique place! Where else in the world can you ski and bike in the same day on some of the best terrain in the world? Every season is completely different, in summer there are so many beautiful lakes and hikes and winter is absolutely magical and is guaranteed to create some special memories! The thing I love the most about Whistler weddings is that Whistler has this unique romantic ability to bring couples together; the memories made here are never forgotten.
More and more couple’s are adding “video” to their wedding budget. What elements does a good Whistler wedding video capture that photos miss?
Having a wedding film captures so many special intimate moments and raw emotions that a photo can’t. The tear in the grooms face as his beautiful bride walks down the isle, your vows to each other and your first dance as husband and wife. It’s so nice to be able to have those special memories of your most important day to show your loved ones who are unable to make it, they’ll feel like there were right there with you. For us, we love being able to look back on our wedding film and re-live the vows we made to each other and especially all the speeches from our loved ones at the reception! Having a Whistler wedding film means we will capture memories that you will keep forever, to show your children and your grand children and watch for years to come!
We still love to watch our wedding video on our anniversaries to remind ourselves of the commitment we made to each other, to reminisce and of course, have a good laugh!
What important pieces of advice would you give to couple’s looking to hire a wedding videographer? What should couple’s be considering?
Personality is huge! It’s important that you are able to connect with your videographer so you feel relaxed and not stressed on your wedding day. If you feel like the paparazzi is in your face the whole day that will reflect on your video. I’d recommend meeting your videographer if possible or have a phone or skype conversation with them before the big day. It’s also important to check out a videographer’s show reel or ask to have a look at some other wedding films they have made to make sure you like their film style. If you like them, chances are you will also like the final product.
Last question: Putting camera’s in the face of a couple on their wedding day could be a little stressful for some people. What tips or advice do you have for the bride and groom for relaxing and enjoying the photo + video shoot?
If you are nervous being in front of the camera, which most people are, it’s important to communicate that with your videographer and make sure you are comfortable.
Whistler Wedding Films like to take more of a back seat approach and capture the day as it unfolds, rather then making you ‘act’. It’s more natural and allows the bride and groom to focus on what is most important, them!
Whistler Wedding Films Testimonial from Client, Kristine
“Mel and Josh were absolutely brilliant to work with! From the planning stages all the way through to receiving our final videos, Mel was flexible, listened to what we wanted and went above and beyond to produce beautiful memories of our wedding. Mel and Josh were amazing on our wedding day as well – my husband was nervous about being filmed but Josh was so relaxed Colin didn’t even realize he was there. Throughout the whole day they blended in and worked as a team with the photographer, wedding planners, and hair and makeup stylists. They made sure to capture all of the special moments – the ones that in the chaos of the day, you don’t even realize are important, but when you look back, are what made your wedding day the best day. Choosing them to film our wedding was one of the best decisions we made when planning our wedding!”
